Lesson Study for Special Needs and Inclusive Education

Lesson Study

Lesson study for assessment

The figure below shows how the Lesson Study process is switched from a teaching improvement to an assessment focus:

Norwich, B. and Ylonen (2015) evaluates the use of Lesson Study for assessment (LSfA) purposes. It explains the principles and design of LSfA procedures based on a Lesson Study model and dynamic assessment principles as shown in above figure.

The evaluation findings based on 6 LS teams (three in each of primary and secondary schools) focused on the LSfA processes and procedures, for example, the outcomes of LSfA for teacher confidence and knowledge, assessment capabilities and continued benefits.

Analysis of the pre-post LSfA pupil assessments showed a decrease in identifying areas of pupil difficulties and an increased identification of enabling factors. This is interpreted as evidence for the LSfA having dynamic assessment potential.
